About Pediatric Sedation
When a child requires surgery, an important component of the procedure is anesthesia. The team of pediatric anesthesiologists specializes in anesthesia for children – from infants through the teen-age years.
Anesthesia induces a loss of feeling or awareness. Local anesthesia causes loss of feeling in a part of the body, while general anesthesia puts the young patient to sleep during their procedure.
Specialized Surgical Care
Working with pediatric anesthesiologists are support staff members who have years of special training and experience in working with young patients. They understand the intricacies of children’s body systems, structures and functions, especially those of infants. This is an important distinction and underscores the difference between general anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology.
The type of anesthesia used is decided by the anesthesiologist based upon individual circumstances such as the child’s age, the type and length of surgery, general health and other factors.
Working as a key member of the surgical team, our pediatric anesthesia staff manages the anesthesia process from the start of our young patients’ surgery until it is complete.
During this time, the child’s heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and oxygen and anesthesia levels are monitored. Because children have special physical requirements, specially designed equipment and techniques are used.
With You All the Way
In addition to comprehensive pediatric care, these highly trained professionals also provide chronic and acute pain management for children.
We understand that the stress of hospitalization and medical treatment can be very traumatic for children and their families. We strive to reduce the anxiety and ensure that our special patients are as comfortable as possible while undergoing treatment.
